Introduction

This topic should be discussed through out the year.  Start by engaging the children in a discussion about difference.  Notice difference in the classroom and in nature.  This project can only be complete with outside help for the students.

Learners
This project is a challenge for 2nd grade but can be used for higher levels as well.  I believe it is hard but with outside help fun for students at this age. Students need to either know how to used a computer or have a helper in the classroom while they are working on the computer.

Curriculum Standards/Objectives
The students will learn what difference by completing this project.  They will also learn social studies, music, art and communication.  They will learn teamwork, and how to follow instructions.  They will learn how to cook a meal from another county.  They will learn how to search for specifics on the computer.

Social Studies Standards

  • Different aspects of different cultures.
  • Learn language, color, overall relationships between cultures
  • How the presence, interaction, and contributions of various groups and cultures have affected the schools, neighborhoods, community and state

Process
  1. Please define the word and the meaning of diversity.
  2. Pick which member will be which fictional person.
  3. Now decide on the country that your group is interested in after I assign the continent to your group.
(You as the teacher need to pick the continents ahead of time)

Lets Get Started…….

Cook  (You as the teacher need to send out a note to the parents of this child letting them know that they are to help with this activity in the home, do not allow the child to make easy recipes.  The recipes should be different but easy for the parent to make, no peanut butter and jelly!)
Your job is to find a recipe that is common in your country of choice.  Then print out the recipe so that your group (with your parents help) can make the recipe for the day that you are presenting to the class.
Step 1: Search for different foods of your country off of the website provided. You are also able to search for other
Websites on foods or recipes across the world.
Step 2: Find a recipe that you enjoy and that would not be hard to make, check with me the teacher, and print it out.
Step 3: Collectively with your parent and group members please make the food to be brought in on your day of
presentation. Remember to make enough so the whole class will be able to taste what you food is like.

Search Engine(search for recipes around the world)

Musician (You as the teacher will be going out and buying the tape or downloading the music piece from a music website such as Morphis)
Your job is to find a piece of music that is relevant to your groups country.  You will then print out the website and give it to your teacher.
Step 1: Go to the website provided or search for other music websites from around the world.
Step 2: Find a music piece that is from your groups country and see if you can listen to that music piece.  If you can and you like it please print out the website, or write down the web address.
Remember, do not just choose the first piece of music you find, listen to it to see if it is what you want.

Websites:
Music From Around The World
Search Engine (Search for Music around the world)

Artist (You as the teacher will be helping this student to use hyperstudio on the computer)
You as an artist are to find a piece of art from the country that your group has chosen.  You will be using Hyperstudio
to recreate your art work.
Step 1: Go to the website provided or another website and search though different museums for a piece of art that represents your country.
Step 2: Print out an image of this piece of art and draw it in your own artistic way using Hyperstudio.  Please make this art the size of the large poster board provided.
Step 3: Color in your piece of art if it calls for it, and make it look as close to the original as you are able.

Websites:
Art Around The World
Search Engine (Search for Art around the world)

Pen Pals (You as the teacher will need to get the pen pals name and address so you can check up and make sure that the student is able to write to your student)
Your job is to find a pen pal from the country that you are studying and begin to write with them.  You may pick either a boy or a girl, they must be in elementary school, and they must be able to write in English.
Step 1: Go to the web site provided and find a pen pal off of the list.
Step 2: Begin talking to them by introducing yourself.
Step 3: Write down their name and country and either the email or web address to give to me, the teacher.

You will receive more information as the year progresses about what to talk to your pen pal about.  Start with asking questions such as what their school day is like and what they like to do after school.

Resources Needed
What is needed:

  • Access to a Computer lab or computer in the classroom
  • E-mail accounts for all students
  • Hyperstudio
  • CD or tape player that can be brought in for music piece

Evaluation
You will know that the student completed the project if they are able to present to you and the rest of the class information about there country.  They know about the food, music, people and art from the country that they picked.
They should have worked hard and taken time to find out all the different aspects of their project.

Conclusion
Diversity is important in American culture, by teaching students how they are different and that difference is good, you are helping with racial and socioeconomic issues.
